| ABSTRACT A new species of the characid genus Knodus is described from the rio Aripuanã (rio Madeira basin). It can be distinguished from its congeners by its very low body depth, the presence of tri- to pentacuspid teeth on the outer premaxillary series, with the median cuspid larger than the lateral ones, the teeth of the inner premaxillary series pentacuspid, distinctly larger than those of the outer series, the maxillary teeth tri- to pentacuspid, with the median cusp slightly larger than the lateral ones, the four anteriormost dentary teeth pentacuspid, the smaller posterior teeth tri- to pentacuspid, a complete lateral line with 36-38 scales, 3 longitudinal scale series from pelvic fin origin to lateral line, and 11-12 circumpeduncular scales. | The species of Hemibrycon occurring in the east of the Andean Cordilleras are reviewed based on their type series and additional specimens. Nine species are redescribed: H. beni from río Beni basin, Bolivia; H. helleri from the upper rio Ucayali, Peru; H. huambonicus from the ríos Huallaga and Marañon basins, Peru; H. jeslkii from the upper portions of ríos Marañon, Ucayali and Madeira basins, Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru; H. metae from río Orinoco basin, Colombia and Venezuela, and Caribbean coastal basins of Venezuela; H. polyodon (type species) from río Pastaza basin, Ecuador; H. surinamensis from coastal basins of French Guiana and Suriname, and from lower rios Tapajós, Tocantins and Xingu basins, Brazil; H. taeniurus from river basins from Trinidad... |

| Exemplares de Bryconamericus iheringii (Boulenger, 1887) coletados nos riachos Cambé, Taquari, Água da Floresta e Baroré, localizados na bacia do rio Tibagi, Estado do Paraná, foram analisados para verificar sua dieta. As coletas foram padronizadas em todos os riachos. Os conteúdos estomacais foram analisados qualitativa e quantitativamente. Verificou-se que a dieta de B. iheringii nos quatro riachos consistiu de itens alimentares que variaram em número, e os de maior importância foram: restos vegetais e detrito, no Cambé; detrito, no Taquari; algas filamentosas e restos vegetais, no Água da Floresta; detrito e restos de insetos, no Baroré. | As dietas de duas espécies de Bryconamericus Eigenmann, 1907 denominadas Bryconamericus sp. 1 e Bryconamericus sp. 2 foram comparadas. As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente, no período de março/97 a fevereiro/98, no rio Iguaçu, Paraná. Ambas são insetívoras, porém a primeira se alimenta predominantemente de larvas de insetos aquáticos e a segunda de insetos terrestres. Em Bryconamericus sp. 1 a boca é sub-terminal e o lábio superior é levemente mais espesso, enquanto em Bryconamericus sp. 2 a boca é terminal e os lábios são delgados. Além disso, a disposição dos dentes é desigual nas duas espécies, confirmando as diferenças encontradas em suas táticas alimentares.
